Thermal spray masking materials

Thermal spray coatings processing involves the use of masking materials as a significant step prior to coating. The masking process exposes only the coating required areas to the abrasive grit blasting gun and subsequently to the coating gun. Inappropriate masking materials behavior by way of failure can cause rejection of the coated part. Many aerospace and medical components are naturally very expensive and so one cannot to take chances and deal with masking failures due to poor engineering functional performance of thermal spray masking.

Firstly, thermal spray masking materials need to lend themselves to be easily applied on to the component surface. They must exhibit sufficient adhesive strength. When cured compounds are used, they usually are re-useable but care must be taken to avoid using past the useful life of these off the part cured masking materials. Chemical compounds used in such cases usually have a very limited shelf life and should not be used past this date. The material data sheet that comes with these compounds usually details this very clearly and also spells out the proper methods and safety precautions to use.

Poor performance of thermal spray masking materials can result in improper grit blasting by way of over blasting the required coating area and potentially enabling coating in no-coat allowed areas. They can also result in shadows. Additionally, they may pose a real problem in the masking removal and de-burring and finishing departments. The engineering and technical functional requirements of thermal spray masking materials are quite extensive and hence only the highest quality materials need to be employed to avoid processing and quality problems.

The lighting industry has been subject to some major changes in recent years with the continued advancement of the energy saving CFL light bulbs and the decision taken by the EU to outlaw all incandescent bulbs by 2012. Despite all the consternation with CFL bulbs there is one topic that seems to be increasingly interesting: LED light bulbs.

Many lighting experts believe that the future of the lighting industry rests with LED technology. However what are the advantages and disadvantages of LED lighting in its current form? In this article I will detail the history of LED technology and discuss what LED lamps have to offer to the lighting market today.

Originally used in devices such as alpha numerical displays and pocket calculators the LEDs have recently seen successful application in commercial and domestic lighting. Two of the biggest factors that are encouraging consumers to change their lighting to LED are: -

So why isn’t all lighting changing to LED? Another advantage of LED lighting is its short ‘on/off time’, this has lead to many local councils in the UK changing their traffic lights to LEDs, not only making them more efficient but also less maintenance is needed. One disadvantage that has been associated with CFL bulbs is their toxicity, or rather their use of mercury, although this has been accounted for with the WEEE levy (a tax on every bulb to contribute to recycling and disposal charges) this problem does not exist with LED lighting, making it more desirable to the more eco-minded companies and individuals.

At present LED lighting technology lends itself to spotlight bulbs because of the ability to manufacture small circuit boards unlike CFL spotlights that need to be slightly bigger to house the tubing. This is changing though with the production of candle, golfball and even strip-light LEDs by a handful of companies, this is a significant development as it proves LED might, someday, incorporate the whole lighting industry and not stay in its current market as a fringe technology. Although there is still a long way to go for LED technology, public acceptance is pivotal to its success, and considering the massive advantages and the rate of technological advancement, this shouldn’t be difficult to achieve.

Court Reporting Stays Ahead Of The Technology Curve

Though most people are aware of their silent presence in the courtroom or deposition rooms, few outside the field of stenography actually understand what court reporters do.  “Don’t they type on those funny typewriters?”  Not always.  The occupation of court reporting goes back thousands of years to at least 63 B.C., when a former slave, working as a secretary for Cicero the philosopher, used his own method of shorthand to record a speech by Cato.  Using a metal stylus, Marcus Tullius Tiro used abbreviations for the most-used words and omitted words that he could easily remember. He also created a pattern of shorthand where a symbol could stand for a complete sentence.  If he had trouble understanding the speaker, he would later compare his notes with those of his pupils. The ampersand (&) is the only sign that still remains of Tiro’s shorthand, but it still has the same meaning in several hundred languages.

As technology evolved, shorthand did as well.  John of Tilbury, a monk, developed the very first system of abbreviated writing for English speaking people in 1180 - an innovation that kept court reporting ahead of the technology curve.  Later, in 1588, Dr. Timothie Bright invented a system of shorthand that had no alphabet at all.  It was made up of hundreds of characters that had to be memorized.  Over the next 300 years, court reporting became more and more refined, shortening the writing process and allowing stenographers working with pen and paper to easily keep up with fast speakers, speaking in excess of 160 words per minute or more.

Court reporting technology took a major leap in 1879, when Miles Bartholomew received a patent for his typewriting machine that used a letter for each stroke.  While this would not be directly used for stenography, as it proved to be too slow, the typewriter was later refined so the keys could represent sounds instead of letters.  This advancement was made by Ward Stone, and is considered to be the greatest contribution to the advancement of machine shorthand than that of any other. His keyboard, still in use today, relies on a minimum number of keys, reducing or eliminating the awkward reaching for keys not directly under the fingers. Using Stone’s machine, even inexperienced operators were then able to attain and break speed writing championship records.

As the shorthand machine design continued to evolve, something was needed to speed up the conversion of shorthand notes into final transcript form. In the 1950s the military and IBM worked together to develop a computerized system that could translate foreign languages into English.  IBM eventually stopped working on the project, citing there was too small a market for the technology. But in the 1970s, a group of court reporters urged NSRA, their association at the time, to help further the creation of computer-aided transcription – CAT software.

Soon, a usable system was created, allowing an individualized dictionary for each court reporter.  So while one set of keystrokes may represent one thing to one reporter, it may have a totally different meaning to another.  The reporter then writes on the steno machine, and an English translation is decoded onto a computer screen.  This is the technology most widely used today.

Rich countries and multinational cooperation’s nations have  developed technology to solve problems facing people in their life. Despite the fact that technology has been helpful in many fields, it is sometimes destructive. Therefore, I can divide the use of technology into three types .

 

   The first type of use is the positive side of technology. For instance, the use of technology for Educational purposes . In school we can use technical aids such as computers, Cds, data show, Documentary camera, microscopes, projectors, scanners for teaching students’ science, math, language etc. This kind of use is helpful and we recommend it very much because it helps our student to be better in the future.

  1. The second type of use  is the negative one. It is  invented just for bad purposes such nuclear weapon which was made just to kill people , animal , plants and life. This kind of weapon should be forbidden. Chemical weapon also destroy peoples life, animal and plants and it should also be stopped. This kind of technology is not helpful at all .  

 

The third type of use is the neutral side of technology (I would say) which uses technology in both sides; positive and negative. For example, using internet which might some way draw some people to use internet in a negative way such as having a use of pornography sites, deviate for drinking alcohol and drugs, smoking intake as well aggressive behavior leading to criminal behaviors . Another example is using satellites for spy other countries secrets.

   At the end, I would like to say that technology users are the ones who can decide to make this technology beneficial or harmful for them . So we encourage governments to educate people by any means of media how to use technology in a good way
